Introduction

Pakistan Diabetes Prevention Program (PakDPP)

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a rapidly increasing disease, especially affecting poor, vulnerable populations in resource deprived settings. In Pakistan, a developing country, the limited resources challenge the health care system to manage this. Urbanization, unhealthy lifestyle, maternal and fetal malnutrition and genetic or epigenetic factors are major contributor to this, with additional risk from sedentary behavior, poor nutrition and excessive consumption of calories, salt, saturated fat and sugar.

Attempting to deal with this, the National Action Plan (NAP) for the management of diabetes was first developed in Pakistan in the mid-1990. Four more NAPs have been developed for the management of diabetes and although initiative have been taken, it has not been at an ideal pace. Stakeholder collaborations, both national and international, were promoted, as public private relationships and development of multifaceted approaches are expected to improve the lives of Pakistanis with diabetes. All the numerous implementation strategies that have been done for the prevention of diabetes since 1990 have been summarized by the current Pakistan Diabetes Prevention Program (Pak- DPP). The authors also briefly explain the Policy Planning and Advocacy, Pakistan Diabetes Leadership Forum (PDLF), Progress Since 2014 (Post PDLF), Steps Taken to Manage Diabetes in Pakistan, Annual Diabetes Awareness Walks, and many more. The four keynotes of PDLF forum 2014 were (1) capacity building, (2) Primary Prevention and Awareness (3) Policy Planning and Advocacy (4) Diabetes Care Programs at the National Levels. The purpose of these discussions was to create a network of committed influencers who can drive the agenda forward on diabetes prevention and care in Pakistan and the wider region. Altogether, the current Pak-DPP as practical program aims to address key regional challenges in the prevention of T2DM in this region of the world.
